A Tradition of Academic Excellence |

SPORTS The purpose of the sports program at UDS is to provide an opportunity
for all students to participate in competitive sports. UDS participates in the Laredo Boys and Girls
Club League Sports in elementary grades and in public & private school
leagues in middle school grades.
Goals of the sports program are to develop individual athletic skills
and to stress human value and develop, through athletic competition, the characteristics
of fair play, dedication, cooperation, and loyalty. To
accomplish these purposes and goals, all students involved in the sports
program must follow the following policies and code of conduct. The first and
most important characteristic of the successful sports program is a positive
attitude toward the game, the coaches, and the other players. The student must concentrate on the mental
aspects of the game and the development of physical skills. OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM for grades 6,7,8 The program focuses on teaming, leadership, and self-esteem building
on a location other than United Day Campus.
Students have traveled to Hunt, Texas to the Mo-Ranch Environmental
Leadership Program (ELP) that offers action-oriented environmental/outdoor
learning experiences for students and teachers. Students learn by using
techniques of scientific investigation, problem solving, experiencing, and
discovery. The ELP is a three-day
program scheduled and required in the fall for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. EIGHTH (8th) GRADE TRIP Students are provided first hand learning experiences. Students have traveled to Washington DC for travel/study programs where they learn government first hand. Seminars have been scheduled in and around Washington for on-site visits to the leading public buildings, monuments, and government offices. Students have been provided with opportunities to participate in discussion meetings with the Members of Congress and their staffs. Evening speakers have been scheduled such as special agents of the FBI and US Secret Service, and Education Specialists from NASA. Each year students and parents work to raise funds to participate in this experience. SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, CLUBS, PROJECTS, AND COMPETITIONS Students are encouraged to actively participate in service
organizations, clubs, projects, and competitions. Service organizations that students may join include; Senior
Citizen Community Service and Student Council, 4-H, Boy Scouts, and other
organizations such as the National Junior Honor Society and the Duke Talent
Search Program that students do not join but are nominated to by preset

programs. Clubs include cheerleading,
mathletes, science, and chess.
